CIPP stands for cured-in-place pipe. A resin-soaked liner is pushed into the old pipe and hardened, leaving a new pipe inside the old one. Those national numbers are a starting frame, not a quote for your lateral.
What the published numbers say
Angi’s 2026 cost guide states that sewer pipe lining alone typically runs $135 to $150 per linear foot when the existing pipe is not severely damaged. It lists pipe bursting with lining at $150 to $190 per foot. This Old House, updated March 30, 2026, gives one broader range of $60 to $250 per linear foot for trenchless work in general.
Do the arithmetic and the spread is clear. A 50-foot lateral at Angi’s lining rate lands between $6,750 and $7,500 before extras. The same page also lists totals that look lower, so published guides do not agree with each other. Treat every figure as a ballpark and get a written price for your own pipe.
Angi also lists a camera inspection at $175 to $350 and permits at up to $1,000, again as national figures. Utah permit fees are set locally, which we cover below.
What moves a lining quote
Per-foot pricing hides the pieces that make two jobs very different. Ask a contractor to break the quote into these lines.
| Factor | Raises the price when | Lowers it when |
|---|---|---|
| Length | The lateral runs far from the house to the main | The run is short and straight |
| Diameter | The pipe is larger, or sizes change along the run | A uniform 4-inch line |
| Cleaning | Heavy roots, scale or grease need long cutting or jetting | The line is already clear |
| Access | No cleanout exists, so one must be installed | A cleanout sits at each end |
| Pipe condition | Sags, offsets or collapse need spot digging | The pipe is round with cracks only |
| Restoration | Concrete or landscaping must be replaced at the pits | Access is in a flowerbed or crawl space |
A quote checklist
- Footage is stated, with the camera footage that supports it.
- Cleaning and the pre-lining camera pass are listed, not assumed.
- Access points are named, including any new cleanout.
- The quote says what happens if the camera finds a collapse or a sag after cleaning.
- Reinstating branch connections is itemized.
- A post-lining camera pass is included so you can see the finished pipe.
- Permit and sewer district fees are shown separately.
- Warranty terms come in writing, and the liner product is named.
What a North Salt Lake permit and fee picture looks like
The Building Department at 10 E Center Street issues plumbing permits through the City Inspect portal. Plumbing permits generally skip plan review, and the over-the-counter fee is $50.50. Inspections run Monday through Thursday, so schedule the lining day around an inspector who can see the work.
Sewer service belongs to the South Davis Sewer District (801-295-3469). The district charges impact fees and sends its own inspector for new laterals or added fixtures, and the city permit does not cover them. Pure relining of an existing pipe is a different question from a new lateral, so ask the district which side of that line your job falls on.
Why older homes show up in lining quotes
Lining makes the most sense when the pipe is old but still round. The city’s General Plan describes a first wave of homes from about 1910 to 1960, west of Orchard Drive and east of Main Street. Laterals from that era were often clay or cast iron, so a lining quote is plausible there, and a camera is the way to confirm it.
Hillside homes east of Orchard Drive date from about 1960 on. Their laterals may be cast iron, ABS or PVC, depending on the year. Foxboro, built between 2000 and 2010, has mostly smooth plastic pipe, so lining is rarely the answer there. If someone quotes full lining on a Foxboro lateral, ask to see the camera footage that shows why.
Need a price based on your actual pipe?
Call the 24/7 line. A camera run gives the footage and pipe condition that a real quote has to start from.
Lining versus other repairs
Lining usually costs less than a trench when the yard has a driveway, mature trees or a slab to cross. It costs more than a spot repair when only one joint has failed. For a sagging or collapsed pipe, lining is not an option, and the comparison becomes bursting versus digging.
A pipe that only clogs now and then may not need either. Regular sewer line cleaning keeps roots in check, and a camera run tells you whether the pipe is sound underneath. See our sewer line repair page for how the options compare.
Insurance and other ways to pay
Homeowners policies typically cover sudden and accidental damage, not wear on an aging pipe. Some policies offer a sewer or water backup endorsement. Ask your insurer before work begins, because claims are easier to approve when the camera footage is dated and clear.
When the quote is too good to be true
Be wary of a price quoted over the phone with no camera pass. Lining over a heavy root mass or a sag traps the defect inside a new pipe. A fair quote starts with cleaning, a camera and a stated plan for what happens if the pipe turns out worse than expected.
Neighbors in West Bountiful and Centerville are covered by the same dispatch line and the same camera-first approach.
Standards behind a lining job
Lining and other trenchless methods still have to meet the plumbing code Utah enforces, the International Plumbing Code (IPC), and the South Davis Sewer District inspects what connects to its lines. Ask any contractor which standard the liner material meets and for the written warranty before you sign.
Frequently asked questions
National guides vary. Angi lists $135 to $150 per foot for lining alone, and This Old House gives a wider trenchless range of $60 to $250 per foot. Neither is a North Salt Lake price, so use them to sanity-check a quote.
Often it costs less than a full trench replacement when there are driveways, trees or slabs to cross. It does not fit every pipe. A collapsed or sagging pipe needs a different repair.
Manufacturers state design lives, but results depend on the cleaning, cure and pipe condition. Ask for the product name and the warranty in writing.
Slightly, because the liner has thickness. For a 4-inch lateral the loss is small, but ask your plumber to confirm flow after lining.
Not unless it says so. The city plumbing permit is $50.50 over the counter, and the South Davis Sewer District charges separately for new laterals. Ask for both to be listed.
Sometimes, because lining needs fewer access points than digging up a slab. Camera footage tells you whether the pipe is round enough, and a plumber has to confirm that before quoting.
