North Salt Lake sits between the Wasatch foothills and I-15, and its homes span more than a century of plumbing. Pre-war pipe west of Orchard Drive, 1990s hillside builds and the Foxboro neighborhood, built between 2000 and 2010, all fail in different ways. A plumber who knows which era you are in saves an hour of guessing.

What to do in the first five minutes of a plumbing emergency

  • Turn off the main water valve, usually where the line enters the house near the water heater or in the basement, if water is escaping.
  • Stop using sinks, tubs and toilets if a drain is backing up, because every flush adds water to the blockage.
  • Switch off power to wet areas at the breaker if you can reach it safely, and stay out of standing water near outlets.
  • Smell gas? Leave the building and call Enbridge Gas at 1-800-767-1689 or 911 before you call a plumber.
  • Move rugs, electronics and stored boxes off wet floors, then photograph the damage for your insurer.
  • Call the 24/7 line and tell the dispatcher what you shut off, so the plumber arrives with the right parts.

Why plumbing problems differ across North Salt Lake

According to the city’s 2013 General Plan, the first wave of homes went up between about 1910 and 1960 west of Orchard Drive and east of Main Street. Houses from that era often have older drain pipe and supply lines that have outlived their design life. If you live there and have had repeated clogs, a camera look at the line usually tells the story faster than another cleaning.

Growth then moved east of Orchard Drive into the foothills, and Eaglewood Golf Course, opened in 1994, drew more homes around it. Hillside lots bring their own question. Properties on sensitive lands, usually east of Highway 89, may need a Geo Hazard Review from the city, so check with the Building Department before major pipe work there.

Foxboro was planned and built between 2000 and 2010 on the west side. Its plumbing is mostly newer plastic piping, and failures tend to be fixture-level leaks, water heater issues and grease clogs rather than aging pipe. We treat repeated trouble in a newer home as a sign of a bad joint or a sag, not age.

What water and sewer service means for your repair

Water comes from the city’s own pump stations for about 60 percent of supply, and the rest is purchased from Weber Basin Water Conservancy District. The city’s 2024 water quality report lists total dissolved solids between 888 and 980 mg/L, which is why scale in water heaters and faucets is a real maintenance item here. For city water emergencies after hours, the number is 801-560-3718.

Sewer service is provided by the South Davis Sewer District, 801-295-3469. If a camera shows a blockage in the public main rather than your own line, we will tell you and the district responds. Plumbing permits go through the North Salt Lake Building Department at 10 E Center Street.

Services our emergency plumbers handle most

Our busiest calls are drain cleaning, water heater repair and leak detection. When a pipe has already failed, burst pipe repair is the first stop, and a water heater that has given up is a replacement job. Backups that reach the house call for sewer line cleaning, and a repeat backup means a sewer inspection with a camera.

Planned work gets the same licensed plumbers. That includes water heater installation, toilet repair, faucet repair and repiping older homes. Commercial properties can use our after-hours line through the commercial plumbing page.

Emergency plumber questions

Yes. The line is answered 24/7, including nights, weekends and holidays. Tell the dispatcher what is happening and what you have shut off, and a licensed plumber is sent.

If water is escaping and the main valve does not stop it, if sewage is rising in a fixture, or if you smell gas, treat it as an emergency. A slow drain or a dripping faucet can wait for a same-day appointment.

Yes. You get a clear price before work starts. The final number depends on access, pipe condition and parts, which is why the plumber looks first.

Our plumbers are licensed and insured. Utah licenses Apprentice, Journeyman, Residential Journeyman, Master and Residential Master plumbers, and you can verify any plumber on the state licence lookup at secure.utah.gov/llv/search/index.html.

We cover Woods Cross, Bountiful, West Bountiful and Centerville with dedicated service pages, and the same line is used for nearby areas in south Davis County. Call to confirm your address.

Many repairs and replacements need one. The Building Department issues plumbing permits through its City Inspect portal and plumbing permits generally have no plan review. We pull permits on work that requires them.

Use the main valve inside the house first. The city does not publish a rule for homeowners using the meter valve, so if the interior valve fails, call Public Works at 801-335-8726 or the after-hours line at 801-560-3718.
