Kitchen Sink Not Draining but Not Clogged: North Salt Lake, UT

A kitchen sink that will not drain even though the trap is clear usually has one of five causes: a blocked vent, a jammed disposal, a clogged dishwasher connection, a clog further down the branch line, or a blocked main line. The decision table below sorts them by what else in the house is acting up.

In North Salt Lake, UT, the first step is the same everywhere. Remove the trap under the sink, clear it, and run water. If the trap is clean and the sink still drains slowly or gurgles, the problem sits beyond the trap, and plunging harder will not reach it.

Start with the symptom, not the clog

Match what you see to the likely cause. Test one thing at a time and run only a little water.

The vent: why a clean pipe can still drain slowly

Every drain needs air behind the water. The vent line runs from the fixture drain up through the wall and out the roof. When it is blocked by a bird nest, leaves or ice, water drains slowly and the trap can be siphoned, so you hear gurgling and sometimes smell sewer gas.

The clue is a pattern. A vent problem is rarely only the kitchen. If the toilet nearby gurgles or the bathroom sink also drains slowly, suspect the vent. North Salt Lake’s winter design temperature is 8 F per the city’s design criteria, and frost can narrow a vent pipe’s opening on the roof. A plumber can check the roof termination with a camera or by running a cable down from above.

The disposal and the dishwasher connection

A disposal with a jammed or partly clogged outlet drains slowly even when the rest of the pipe is fine. Switch the disposal off at the wall switch, then check the flywheel for a stuck object. Never put your hand in. Use tongs. If the disposal hums but does not turn, the motor is stuck and many units have a hex socket at the bottom for turning the flywheel by hand with a wrench.

The dishwasher drain tube joins the disposal or the sink tailpiece. When the sink drains slowly, the dishwasher can fill the sink during its drain cycle, or the dishwasher stays wet. A clogged knockout plug is a classic cause on a new disposal, where the plastic plug was never removed and the dishwasher cannot drain.

If you have an air gap, the small cylinder on the sink deck, open its cap and clean it. A blocked air gap spits water out the top or leaves the dishwasher full. If you have a high loop instead, the hose should rise to the underside of the counter before it drops to the disposal.

Signs the problem is the main line

  • More than one fixture drains slowly on the same day.
  • The toilet bubbles when the kitchen sink or washer drains.
  • A floor drain or basement shower shows water or a sewer smell.
  • The problem returns within days of a cleaning.
  • Water backs up into the tub when the kitchen sink empties.

If two or more apply, run no more water and call. A clog in a house line serves the whole home, and the lowest fixture is where it shows up first. A sewer line cleaning visit with a camera tells you whether the line is blocked, sagging or broken.

Grease: the clog that hides in the middle of the pipe

Cooking fat that cools in a pipe forms a coating on the inside wall. A coating narrows the pipe without sealing it, so water drains but slowly.

A cable machine with a cutting head scrapes the wall instead of poking a hole. That is the difference between a drain that works for a week and one that works for a year. Boiling water is not a fix, and plastic pipes can soften. Commercial drain chemicals can also harm older joints and are a hazard for the next person who opens the trap.

What the home’s age tells you

North Salt Lake’s 2013 General Plan puts the first wave of homes between about 1910 and 1960, west of Orchard Drive and east of Main Street. Kitchen drain lines from that period may be cast iron or galvanized steel, which roughen inside and catch grease more easily. If your kitchen sink clogged twice in a year, a camera inspection is worth it.

Foxboro homes were built from 2000 to 2010, mostly with smooth plastic drain pipe. A slow sink there is more often a grease coating, a disposal problem or a dishwasher hose than a failing pipe.

North Salt Lake notes for slow kitchen drains

Sewer service is provided by the South Davis Sewer District, which can be reached at 801-295-3469. If a camera shows the blockage is in the public main rather than your own line, the district is the right call.

Cleaning an existing drain does not normally need a permit. Replacing or relocating pipe does, and plumbing permits are issued by the Building Department at 10 E Center Street through City Inspect. Utah limits what homeowners may do themselves, so check with the Building Department and DOPL before changing pipe.

The Utah plumbing code is the 2024 International Plumbing Code (IPC) from July 1, 2026. Under it, each fixture drain needs a trap and vent, which is why venting problems show up as slow drains and gurgling.

When to stop and call

Stop running water and call if sewage or gray water rises anywhere, if the drain is slow in more than one fixture, or if the trap is clean and the disposal and dishwasher check out. Our plumbers carry cable machines and cameras, and a drain cleaning visit with a camera usually shows whether the cause is grease, a sag or a main line problem.

A plumbing vent that is blocked or a broken line is not a do-it-yourself fix, and a repair may need a permit. The same line serves Bountiful and Woods Cross, where older homes show the same grease and cast iron patterns.

Safety steps while you troubleshoot

Keep chemical drain openers out of the sink, since they can splash and can harm pipe joints. Turn off the disposal at the wall and the breaker before reaching toward it. Wear gloves when you open the trap and keep a bucket under it. Drain work follows the plumbing code, the 2024 International Plumbing Code from July 1, 2026 in Utah.

Frequently asked questions

Usually the clog is further along the pipe than the trap, or the vent is blocked and the water cannot flow freely. The disposal and the dishwasher connection are the other common causes.

Yes. A vent that is blocked leaves a vacuum behind draining water, which slows the flow and causes gurgling. A plumber can check the roof termination and clear the line.

The dishwasher drain shares the sink’s trap or the disposal outlet. If either is partly clogged, the dishwasher’s pumped water has nowhere to go. Check the disposal knockout plug and the air gap first.

Not on its own. It becomes one when sewage rises in the lowest fixture of the house, because the main line is likely blocked. The 24/7 line handles those calls.

We advise against it. Chemicals sit in standing water, can burn skin and can damage older joints. A cable machine removes the clog instead of dissolving part of it.

The South Davis Sewer District at 801-295-3469 handles sewer service in North Salt Lake. A camera run on your line shows which side of the property line the blockage is on, and we will tell you if it is the district’s.
